Dementia Adventure - Gardening Group

Dementia Adventure run a gardening goup at the Jubilee Allotments in Great Dunmow on Friday mornings. This space is dedicated to creating positive experiences for individuals with dementia. It's more than just gardening; it's a catalyst for positive change within the community. Each session sees up to six volunteers assisting six individuals with dementia in maintaining the two allotment plots. Activities extend beyond gardening to include a game of bowls and engaging discussions over light refreshments. There is no charge for this service and drinks are provided.

The support team tailors activities to each participant's abilities and adjusts tasks to ensure they're meaningful and achievable, regardless of cognitive abilities or mood. Dementia Adventure also emphasises the importance of respite for carers, encouraging them to take this time to go and do something else for themselves.

The Gardening Group has become a close-knit community where the distinction between people with dementia and volunteers often blurs, because everyone just works together.

Research shows that people with dementia often struggle with spending too much time indoors, so this gardening group is ideal for getting people outside, spending time in nature which is good for mental and physical wellbeing.
